SUMMARY:Class #202: Cast Drawing & Still Life with Addison Xu
DESCRIPTION:In this class\, students can choose between drawing one cast the entire 6 weeks or painting 6 still lives (1 per week). \nCast drawing instruction will focus on the principles of proportion and value as well as the mechanics of form\, light\, and shadow. Students will learn to combine 2D and 3D thinking in order to visually sculpt a two-dimensional drawing. \nPainting instruction will teach the basics of painting\, focusing on accurate color mixing\, accurate proportions\, light effects\, three-dimensionality\, organization of values\, and other topics. Each 3-hour painting will teach students the value of simplification. \nStudents will paint one simple subject a week – for example\, fruit. Bringing in items to paint is also encouraged. \nSpecial Notes\nThis class meets in our lower-level studio.

SUMMARY:Class #350: Oil Painting - The Art of Surfaces with Andrew Conklin
DESCRIPTION:Time : 6:30PM – 9:00PM CDT on Thu —\n\n\n\nThis course explores the observation and painting of specific surface textures in oil\, including water\, wood grain\, marble\, and glass. Through focused studies\, students will examine how light\, color\, transparency\, pattern\, and surface variation influence the appearance of each material. Each texture will be painted individually\, allowing students to develop techniques for accurately conveying its distinct visual qualities. \nThe course concludes with a two-session still-life project\, painting from life the range of textures explored in isolation. This final painting will challenge students to apply their understanding of material\, light\, color\, and spatial relationships while creating a cohesive and visually engaging work in oil. \n\n\n\n\nSpecial Notes \n\nThis class meets in our lower-level studio.\nNo class on 11/12 and 11/26.\nLimited to 9 students.\n\n\n\nRequired Supplies \n\nSupply List

SUMMARY:Still Life\, As a Way to Compose with Iona Ellsworth
DESCRIPTION:This one day\, introductory workshop will focus on using the still life genre as a means of learning to compose artistically. We will think about how to create cohesive yet dynamic arrangements while exploring narrative threads. We will discuss common “types” of compositions and investigate their possible combinations and variations\, as well as covering the meaning behind concepts like distribution\, interchange\, and rhythm\, among others. \nThe first hour of the class will be spent analyzing what makes a strong composition. We will deconstruct a few masterworks and go over different flexible conventions and frameworks. \nThe remainder of the morning will be dedicated to creating several small poster studies of different compositions using a variety of objects. I encourage students to try out many different arrangements\, focusing on creating unity with line\, tone and color. \nAfter lunch\, I will help students select one\, strong composition and they will have the remainder of the afternoon to begin their painting. The goal is not necessarily to finish the painting\, but to learn how to scale a poster study up and to keep the “whole” working together\, even as they render objects individually. \nStudents should have some experience and familiarity with drawing and painting in oil. \n\n\n\n\nRequired Supplies \n\n\n\n\nCanvas paper pad or sketchbook\, at least 11 x 14\nThese are for creating small poster studies. Use canvas paper if you’d like to make your poster studies in paint\, and a sketchbook if you prefer to draw. Canson has a good line of canvas paper pads. \n\n\n8 x 10 canvas\, panel\, or loose linen/canvas sheet for your final composition\nWhatever surface you are comfortable with. I like the centurion brand for both rigid panels and loose linen sheets. \n\n\nA combination of bristle and soft natural hair brushes\nBring what you usually use and are comfortable with. I recommend having at least one smaller stiff brush that holds a decent point for drawing. \n\n\nOil paint\nI recommend a somewhat limited palette of: ivory black\, ultramarine blue\, burnt sienna\, alizarin crimson or quinacridone red\, cadmium red medium\, yellow ochre\, cadmium yellow light and titanium or lead white. Any brand is ok\, however I recommend investing in artist’s grade. \n\n\nPalette cups with gamsol and linseed oil \n\n\nPalette\nWhatever you are comfortable using. I use a handheld wooden palette from @traditional.palette.co. I recommend a glass or wooden palette with plenty of mixing room over disposable paper palettes. \n\n\n2H\, H and HB pencils\, kneaded eraser\, pen eraser\, pencil sharpener or knife and sandpaper \n\n\nRuler or t-square for measuring out a 4:5 aspect ratio for your poster studies \n\n\nPaper towels (I like viva or blue shop towels) \n\n\nBlue tape \n\n\nObjects to paint\nObjects of different size\, color\, shape\, material\, texture and classification. Since this is only a one day workshop\, try to keep your objects simple but interesting. If you have a narrative in mind\, try to bring one or two objects that support that narrative. Some ideas include: fruit\, vegetables\, bread\, kitchen utensils\, books\, paper items\, etc. Avoid overly complex items\, or items made of glass. Consider bringing different color cloths to experiment with your background colors. \n\n\nMahl stick (optional) \n\n\nGloves (optional)

SUMMARY:Class #620 - Multi-Media: Construction of the Head & the Nude Figure with Stuart Fullerton
DESCRIPTION:1:30 PM – 4:30PM CDT on Sat.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTake a big step up in your portrait and figure studies by studying both! The class will be devoted to solving some of the recurring issues that come up in portraiture and figure drawing\, using gesture and comparative measurement to capture the solid aspect of the head\, placement of the features\, and proportion and gesture of the full figure. Using vine charcoal or graphite pencils–or oil or pastel pencils\, it’s up to you! –students will learn to draw the biggest parts of the head and figure first\, using the hand mirror and a plumb line as invaluable tools. Mapping the shape of the shadows and blocking in the darks\, students will proceed to modeling their work using light and dark. \nIn the eight-week class\, four weeks will be devoted to a portrait pose.  Four weeks will be devoted to a nude figure pose.  Students will have the option to draw or paint the nude figure or to draw or paint the portrait. The class will also include learning from one of the masters of charcoal drawing by doing a copy (as homework) to be reviewed in class with me.  I’ll send you a good quality photo of a master drawing and those who would like (it’s not a requirement) will copy it and receive input and instruction. \n\nSpecial Notes \n\n\n\n\n\nThere is an $80 non-refundable model fee.\nThis class will meet in our 3rd floor studio.\nNo class on 11/28\, 12/26 and 1/2.\n\n\n\nRequired Supplies \n\nSupply List
